Placing a baby on his or her stomach only while awake and supervised is called tummy time. Use the Boppy Tummy Time Prop to help support your baby. Tummy time develops strong neck and shoulder muscles while promoting motor skills. It can also prevent the back of your baby’s head from developing flat spots.

Tummy time can also help your baby build the strength needed for sitting up, rolling over, crawling and walking. Both you and your baby should be awake during this time. Never leave your baby unattended during tummy time.

How To Use Boppy Pillow for Tummy Time

Below is a step by step guide on how to use boppy pillow for tummy time.

Step 1) It’s best to put a blanket down for your baby as it adds extra cushion for your baby’s bottom and grip for the boppy pillow.

Step 2) Put the boppy pillow down on the blanket and gently sit your babies upper body against the inner “C” portion.  Your babies arms and arm pits typically rest on top of the boppy pillow.

Step 3) To add extra security, place toys in front of your baby to keep their attention forward.  This helps prevent your baby from turning and twisting out of the boppy pillow.

Step 4) Watch for cues that your baby has had enough.  Typically, you will see your babies head staying down more or they may be fussy or even cry.  Do your best not to let it get to this point.  The total time will depend on your babies age and development.  This can range from 3 to 20 minutes.

When Do You Start Tummy Time?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, tummy time can start as early as the first day back from the hospital.  Since this is muscular development and body control, it’s best time limit tummy time to 2-3 times per day.  At first, you may want to limit tummy time to 2-3 minutes.  Over time, your baby will be able to withstand longer spurts of time as their muscles are becoming stronger.
